Established originally in 1820 as a draper's shop by James Shoolbred on Tottenham Court Road, London, the company expanded to design and manufacture high quality furniture by 1860 in their thriving and fashionable shop. By 1880, Jas Shoolbred had expanded his business to such a point that it became of the first large department stores in London, supplying high quality pieces for the Victorian home. His furniture was always photographed alongside textiles and accessories sold by the company, creating a sort of early interior design catalogue for clients to view. Unfortuntely, James Shoolbred & Co did not survive the financial crash of 1920 and ceased trading in 1931.
