Derived from the Japanese word for light, Akari light sculptures are considered an icon of 1950s design. Designed by Isamu Noguchi in 1951, the sculptures were handmade for half a century by the original manufacturer in Gifu, Japan, using handmade washi paper, bamboo ribbing, and supported by a metal frame.
