JOAQUIM CHANCHO

Tarragona, Spain, 1943

Artistic Statement
Joaquim Chancho, a prominent figure in Spanish abstraction, has spent over five decades exploring the intricacies of geometry, composition, and space. Since his beginnings in the 1960s, Chancho's work has been defined by a rigorous approach to the plastic arts, creating a powerful discourse that stands independent of the prevailing schools or movements of his time.

Chancho’s early career focused on a methodical investigation of key elements such as geometry, tonal relationships, intensity, luminosity, and spatial vibrations. These elements have since become the foundation of his artistic language. His commitment to simplicity and geometry is evident in his use of black and white, horizontal and vertical lines, and sequences that incorporate signs and calligraphic elements.

Chancho’s work is characterized by a duality: it is at once rigorously abstract and conceptual, exploring the possibilities of non-figurative language, and deeply suggestive, evoking visual impressions and mental sensations. His art navigates between geometry as a tool for analyzing and structuring space, and geometry as a catalyst for projecting space toward real or symbolic images.
