Artistic Statement
Some artists possess an innate ability to connect with the roots of tradition through their simplicity. They are the intuitive creators, akin to dowsers who can sense water deep beneath even the most barren desert. Antonia Ferrer is one such artist. With just her hands and elemental materials, she evokes the essence of Eastern painting—especially Korean and Japanese—on flat surfaces, imbuing them with the depth of a landscape, the vastness of a distant sea, or the darkness of a deep well.

Ferrer draws inspiration from a variety of sources, from the textured surfaces of Tàpies to the Mediterranean light that bathes its beaches. Her work appears deceptively simple, yet within this apparent ease lies a profound quality and passion that resonate in her pieces. Although she is early in her artistic journey, Ferrer has already carved out a distinctive path, leaving a recognizable mark.

“My philosophy is the pursuit of simplicity. I avoid getting caught up in details, instead focusing on what is essential—the significant. I like to think of it as a sieve that filters out everything except what truly matters.

In my paintings, I explore primitive materials, applied in a gestural manner, blurring the line between sculpture and painting, much like a bas-relief. The process is deeply minimalist: I start with a pre-worked surface instead of a blank canvas, creating a tactile base of texture. Then, I cover it with a wash of color, allowing the color to react to the existing marks, creating light and shadow. This approach yields results I could never plan or imagine in advance—everything evolves naturally, like life itself.

I manipulate the material, creating marks inspired by the traces left by the sea after a storm, when everything is calm. The sea is a constant source of inspiration for me. Through the lightness of color and composition, I strive to reflect a state of calm, serenity, and aesthetic simplicity that invites a sensual appreciation of my work.”
