Maru Quiñonero

Maru Quiñonero, born in Murcia in 1979, is a self-taught artist whose work delves into the emotional and cultural significance of colour. The second of four siblings, Maru's stoic, easy-going nature and her ability to mediate have deeply influenced her creative process. After graduating with a degree in Art History from the University of Murcia in 2001, she pursued a Master’s in Marketing and Fashion. This led her to a role at Condé Nast, but it was in 2010, following a personal journey through depression and a move to Madrid, that she truly embraced her artistic calling.

In Madrid, Maru spent over a decade exploring figurative illustration and collage before ultimately finding her voice in abstraction. Since 2017, she has focused on the study of color as the central element of her work. Her research spans both classical and contemporary uses of color, as well as its representation in pop culture and its deeper emotional impact. Unrestricted by traditional fine arts training, Maru turns her lack of formal education into a strength, using her self-taught background to break free from conventional artistic boundaries. Her creative process is marked by a fearless experimentation with techniques, materials, and mediums, where mistakes are seen as opportunities for new creation.
